A Kindle for Christmas!

Well, Christmas is over and it’s almost time to go back to normal, whatever that is.

Father Christmas brought me a Kindle, an item I never thought to own but now wonder how I ever managed without. It will save me lugging an extra suitcase with me on holidays because I always become panicky if I don’t have at least six books to hand, as well as the one I’m writing. The Kindle is comfortable to hold and turning a page is simple and doesn’t detract from the reading experience. Now all I will need is this one, slim little gadget with a library of books loaded onto it.

There’s a great deal of controversy about whether or not e-books can replace a physical book.

That certainly isn’t the case for me but they do offer a good alternative reading experience. E-books are generally cheaper since the publishers don’t have to store or distribute them with the associated costs of a physical book. One potential problem for the reader is that it’s all too easy to spend more money than you realise on downloading e-books just because it’s so simple!

Real books live on my book cases for years as I can’t bear to be parted from them. Opening one of these old friends instantly transports me back to the beaches, trains and kitchen tables where I first read them.

There is something very special about opening a new book, the pages all crisp and unmarked, with the anticipation and excitement of entering a new world. And then there is the comfort of returning to a much loved volume, reawakening old memories and surprising yourself when you discover something you missed the first time around.

For me, e-books and physical books each have their own distinctive place in my life.

  1. I’m impressed, I need to say. Really rarely do I encounter a weblog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail on the head. Your idea is outstanding; the problem is one thing that not sufficient individuals are speaking intelligently about. I’m very completely happy that I stumbled throughout this in my search for something regarding this.

    • Hi there!

I’m still loving my Kindle, finding it really convenient to carry with me. The only problem is that I read so fast that I can see myself spending far too much money in the Kindle store.

Another small glitch I’ve noticed is that the text on an e-book isn’t always perfectly formatted, which, as a writer myself, I find irritating. But these are small irritations against the generally pleasurable reading experience.

I’m glad you found something of interest to you on my website. Please keep reading – I like to know the blog isn’t wandering around in the wilderness!

Note to self: make more time to write the blog.
