Why an historical novel?

People sometimes ask me why I like to write historical novels. The answer is complicated because what really interests me is the human condition.

I wasn’t particularly good at history at school – it seemed dry and uninteresting. What really fascinates me now is how people at a particular moment in time lived and how their thoughts were influenced by the current world view. Political history leaves me cold, except in so far as an event impacted on people’s everyday lives.

Primary sources

Researching  primary sources, whether it is reading Pepys diaries or love letters from soldiers to their sweethearts in the first world war,  is a fascinating and  wonderful way to learn about history.

And the past is full of marvellous stories waiting to be told.
